Every year the second the weather turns I go through the exact same thing, standing in front of my wardrobe convinced I own nothing warm enough for the school run.
It is never true. I always have a coat in there somewhere. What I actually mean is I want something new, something that feels a bit more put together than last year’s coat, without spending the kind of money that makes me wince at the checkout.
This year I went properly deep into Amazon looking for coats that read as expensive without the price tag to match, the same quiet luxury approach I take with the rest of my wardrobe and my home. Think soft neutrals, good shapes, real texture, nothing that shouts.

This is the one I would tell a friend to buy first. It is long enough to actually keep your legs warm, the hood is generous enough to fit over a hat, and it still has a proper shape instead of looking like a sleeping bag with arms. Genuinely one of the best value puffers I found in the whole search.
CREATMO Thicken Puffer Padded Long Coat
If you want maximum warmth this is the one to go for. It is properly padded, sits below the knee, and the hood has enough structure to actually block the wind rather than just flapping about. I would wear this over jeans and boots and call it done.
Orolay Thickened Down Jacket with Faux Fur Trim
Orolay coats have a bit of a cult following online and after seeing this one in person I understand why. The faux fur trim around the hood softens the whole look, and it comes in proper true black rather than the washed out grey black some coats end up.

Water resistant and with a hood that buttons off when you do not need it, this is the sensible trench for actual British weather. It still has that classic double breasted trench shape, it just will not ruin your day the second it starts drizzling.

This is the trench I would save up for on purpose. The detachable belt and the double button front give it a proper tailored feel, and the black works just as well over jeans as it does over a going out dress.
