Modest Gym Outfit Ideas That Are Actually Cute!

If you’re anything like me, a Muslim woman who prefers a bit more coverage, comfort over everything and absolutely cannot be doing with anything that rides up during a squat…finding the right gym outfit can feel like a mission.

I’m Shaz, mum of four from East London, currently deep in my body recomposition era after losing over 20kg on Mounjaro and then realising I needed to actually build some muscle.

I go to a women’s only gym which m§eans no hijab required for me personally but I still prefer modest, comfortable coverage because that’s just my style.

And for real, modest gym wear has come a long way.

We are not talking shapeless, unflattering sacks.

We are talking actually cute, functional, stylish looks that keep everything covered and still make you feel good while you’re lifting.

Here are 25 modest gym outfit ideas to inspire your next workout wardrobe.

What Makes a Gym Outfit Modest?

Before we get into the looks — let’s quickly define what modest gym wear actually means because it’s different for everyone.

For me personally it means:

  • Nothing too tight or revealing
  • Good coverage on the bottom, no see through leggings
  • Tops that don’t ride up during exercise
  • Comfortable enough to actually move in

For others it might mean full coverage including arms and legs, looser fits or layered looks. There’s no single definition, modest is personal. This list covers a range of coverage levels so there’s something for everyone.

The Modest Gym Outfit Formula

Flat lay of modest gym outfit essentials — high waisted leggings, oversized tee, longline sports bra, loose joggers and supportive trainers, neutral tones, clean aesthetic

Before the outfit ideas, here’s the simple formula that works every time:

Base layerHigh waisted leggings or joggers

Middle layer — longline sports bra or fitted vest

Top layer — oversized tee, loose top or zip up hoodie

Footwear — supportive trainers

Mix and match within that formula and you genuinely cannot go wrong. Now let’s get into the looks.

Modest Gym Outfit Ideas: Leggings Based Looks

1. Classic Oversized Tee and High Waisted Leggings

The outfit I wear most often.

High waisted leggings (the ones with the hidden pockets are a must!) — no see through essential, paired with an oversized tee that hits mid thigh. Simple, comfortable, covers everything. You cannot go wrong. Coverage in the right places are key. Doesn’t really affect me when I go to an all women’s gym.

2. Loose Fitting Tunic Top and Leggings

A longer tunic style top that hits mid thigh or below paired with leggings underneath. Flowy enough to feel comfortable, covered enough to feel modest. Works brilliantly for yoga and Pilates.

3. Zip Up Hoodie Over Leggings

A lightweight zip up hoodie over leggings and a fitted vest. Great for cooler days or if you run cold in the gym. Layer up for the warm up, zip down once you’re moving.

4. Long Sleeve Fitted Top and Leggings

A fitted but full coverage long sleeve top with high waisted leggings. Arms covered, midriff covered, everything covered. Clean and put together without being bulky.

5. Loose Tank Top Layered Over Long Sleeve

A loose vest or tank top layered over a fitted long sleeve underneath. Arm coverage from the long sleeve, extra coverage on top from the vest. Layered looks are always a good idea.

Modest Gym Outfit Ideas: Joggers Based Looks

7. Joggers and Oversized Tee

My second most worn outfit.

Loose joggers…not skin tight, with an oversized tee. Maximum comfort. Great for weight training days when you just need to move freely. I wear mens clothing for that extra loose fit.

8. Tapered Joggers and Fitted Long Sleeve

Tapered joggers that are slim but not tight paired with a fitted long sleeve top. More polished than the oversized look but still fully modest and comfortable.

Wear different shades of the same colour — light sage leggings with a deeper sage hoodie for example. Looks intentional and stylish with minimal effort.

25. Bold Colour Block

If neutrals aren’t your thing — colour block. Navy and white. Black and hot coral. Deep purple and grey. Bold, fun and makes getting dressed for the gym genuinely enjoyable.

My Modest Gym Outfit Essentials

After months of going to a women’s only gym three times a week and genuinely trying most of these combinations — here’s what I always come back to:

For weight training days: Oversized tee, high waisted squat proof leggings, supportive trainers. Freedom of movement, full coverage, no distractions.

For cardio days: Fitted long sleeve top, high waisted leggings, lightweight zip up for warming up.

For low intensity days: Loose joggers, oversized hoodie, whatever trainers are nearest. Comfort is the priority.

The most important thing regardless of the look — squat proof leggings. Non negotiable. Test them before you wear them. You’ll thank me later. 😄

FAQ: Modest Gym Outfits

What should a modest woman wear to the gym?

High waisted leggings or joggers with an oversized or longline top gives great coverage and comfort. Layering a hoodie or zip up adds extra modesty and warmth for warm ups. The key is choosing squat proof, non see through fabrics.

Can you wear modest clothes to the gym?

Absolutely. Modest gym wear has never been more widely available or stylish. Loose joggers, longline tops, sports hijabs and full coverage activewear sets are all widely available and completely practical for working out.

What gym clothes are best for hijabi women?

A breathable sports hijab, long sleeve fitted top and wide leg gym trousers or full coverage activewear set works brilliantly. Several brands now specifically design modest activewear for Muslim women.

Where can I buy modest gym clothes in the UK?

Amazon has a huge range of modest activewear at every price point. ASOS, Next and H&M also have great modest friendly options. Sports hijabs are widely available on Amazon and from specialist modest activewear brands.

Do I need to wear a hijab at a women’s only gym?

That’s entirely a personal choice. Many Muslim women choose not to wear hijab at women’s only gyms. Others prefer to wear it regardless. There’s no right or wrong, do what feels right for you.

Modest Gym Wear Should Make You Feel Good

Getting to the gym is hard enough without also stressing about what to wear. The right modest gym outfit should make you feel covered, comfortable and confident enough that once you’re there, all you’re thinking about is the workout.

I’m currently three months into consistent gym sessions and the body recomposition is genuinely working. Lifting heavy, prioritising protein, showing up consistently. The outfit helps more than you’d think, when you feel good in what you’re wearing you actually want to go.

Start with one great pair of squat proof leggings and one oversized tee. Build from there. That’s honestly all you need.
